How to set up Instagram and connect it with AI agents

Switch Instagram to a professional account, link it to your Facebook Page, then connect it in AIM. The AI agents prepare Instagram ads and read reach from that profile.

By The AIM team at Hekmalabs

AIM's AI agents prepare Instagram ads and captions for a professional Instagram account that is linked to your Facebook Page. They also read followers, reach, profile visits, and accounts engaged. A personal Instagram account on its own will not appear in AIM.

At a glance

  • Time: about 10 minutes if the Facebook Page is already set up.
  • Access you need: a professional Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page you admin.
  • What AIM can do: prepare paused Instagram ads, draft captions, and read reach and engagement.
  • What AIM cannot do: turn on spend, post without your permission, or see your Instagram password.

Before you start

  • The Instagram account you want to advertise from.
  • Admin access to the Facebook Page it should be linked to. Set up that Page first with the Facebook Page guide.
  • The Facebook login that manages both.
  • In AIM, the Owner, Admin, or Marketer role on the workspace.

You sign in with Facebook, not with Instagram. AIM never asks for your Instagram password.

Set up Instagram

  1. In the Instagram app, go to Settings and activity, then Account type and tools, and switch to a Professional account. Business and Creator both work.
  2. Finish the category and contact details Instagram asks for.
  3. In the same professional settings, link the account to the Facebook Page you will use in AIM. Instagram may send you to Facebook to confirm. If the Page and the Instagram account are not linked, AIM cannot see the Instagram account.
  4. If the account belongs to a Meta Business Portfolio, open business.facebook.com and check the Instagram account is listed under Accounts. The person who connects AIM must be able to see it.
  5. Add a profile photo and a bio that match the Page. Your profile is what people see on the ad.
  6. You do not need to boost a post or open Ads Manager first.

Connect Instagram with AIM's AI agents

  1. Sign in to AIM and open Integrations, then Instagram.
  2. Click Connect Meta. Facebook asks to see Instagram accounts linked to your Pages, plus basic insights.
  3. Approve access, and include the Page that owns this Instagram account.
  4. Back in AIM, choose the Instagram account. A workspace uses one account at a time.
  5. When the badge says Active, the connection is ready.

What happens after you connect

Here is what AIM does with the connection, in plain terms.

  1. Your access is stored privately. Meta gives AIM an access grant, not your password. AIM keeps it encrypted, uses it only for this workspace, and deletes it from AIM when you disconnect.
  2. The agents read results on a schedule. About twice a day, Analyst & Reporter reviews reach and engagement alongside your ad results. You can also click Refresh insights on the Instagram page at any time.
  3. Ads are checked, then wait for you. Instagram placements go through the same pre-flight check as every Meta campaign: they must be paused, meet the budget minimum, and carry tracking. Captions are checked against Instagram's length limits and common policy problems. Prepared campaigns show as Needs your approval in AIM, and you get an email.
  4. Organic posts wait for you too. Social Publisher can prepare captions for regular posts. Nothing is posted unless you turn on auto-posting for the workspace, and every post needs an image you have approved.
  5. Everything is logged. The Agent work on Instagram list on the integration page records every time an agent read from or prepared something for this account.

Which AI agents use this connection

  • Creative Studio prepares images that match the profile people will see.
  • Media Buyer adds Instagram placements to campaigns. They stay paused until you approve spend.
  • Copywriter drafts captions in the account's voice.
  • Social Publisher prepares organic captions.
  • Analyst & Reporter reads followers, reach, profile visits, and accounts engaged.

If something looks wrong

  • Only Facebook Pages show up, not Instagram. The account is still personal, or it is not linked to a Page. Fix that in Instagram, then disconnect in AIM and connect again.
  • Choose an account. You signed in but have not picked the Instagram account yet.
  • Sign in again or Expired. Meta ended the access grant. This often happens after a password change or a security check. Click Connect Meta again.
  • Needs attention. AIM could not reach the account. Open the Instagram page in AIM to see the reason.

What stays in your control

Disconnecting in AIM stops the agents immediately and removes AIM's access grant. Your Instagram account, posts, and followers stay as they are. To revoke access on Facebook's side too, remove AIM under Facebook Settings, then Business Integrations.
