How to set up Google Analytics and connect it with AI agents
Create a GA4 property, confirm visits are arriving, then connect it in AIM so the AI agents can read traffic and conversions. The connection is read-only.
Google Analytics shows AIM's AI agents what happened on your site after someone arrived: sessions, users, conversions, and engagement. It is how they tell whether a campaign brought in customers or only clicks. The connection is read-only. The agents cannot change your measurement setup.
Use this guide when you connect Google Analytics for the first time, or when your property does not appear after you sign in.
At a glance
- Time: about 20 minutes for a new property, or 5 minutes if one is already collecting data.
- Access you need: at least Viewer on the GA4 property.
- What AIM can do: read traffic, landing pages, conversions, and engagement.
- What AIM cannot do: edit tags, filters, key events, or property settings.
Before you start
- A Google account you can sign in with.
- A website or app you can add a tag to, or a developer who can.
- Permission to create a GA4 property, or at least Viewer access if the property already exists.
- In AIM, the Owner, Admin, or Marketer role on the workspace.
Set up Google Analytics
- Open analytics.google.com and sign in.
- If this business has no Analytics account yet, open Admin and create one. Name it after the business, not after a campaign.
- Create a GA4 property. Older Universal Analytics properties are retired and will not appear in AIM.
- Add a Web data stream and enter the site URL. Copy the Measurement ID. It starts with
G-. - Install the Google tag. If you use Tag Manager, add a Google tag with that Measurement ID and publish the container. The Tag Manager guide walks through it. Otherwise, paste Google's tag snippet into your site's header.
- Open the Realtime report, then load your site in another tab. Your visit should appear within a minute or two. If it does not, the tag is not firing yet, and the agents will have nothing to read.
- Mark the actions that matter as key events, such as a form submit, a purchase, or a signup. The agents can only report conversions that GA4 already counts.
- If a teammate will connect AIM, open Admin, then Property access management, and give their Google user at least Viewer. They do not need Editor.
Connect Google Analytics with AIM's AI agents
- Sign in to AIM and open Integrations, then Google Analytics.
- Click Connect Google. Google asks you to approve read-only access to Analytics.
- Sign in with the Google user that can view the property.
- Choose the GA4 property for this workspace. A workspace uses one property at a time.
- When the badge says Active, the agents can read it.
What happens after you connect
Here is what AIM does with the connection, in plain terms.
- Your access is stored privately. Google gives AIM a read-only access grant, not your password. AIM keeps it encrypted, uses it only for this workspace, and deletes it from AIM when you disconnect.
- The agents read your results on a schedule. About twice a day, Analyst & Reporter reviews sessions, conversions, and engagement alongside your ad results. You can also click Refresh insights on the Google Analytics page whenever you want the latest numbers.
- Ads are judged by what happened on your site. When an ad platform reports clicks but Analytics shows few visits or conversions, the agents treat the gap as a warning. They do not report it as a win.
- Missing measurement gets flagged. If key events are missing or traffic stops arriving, the report says so before anyone recommends more spend.
- You get a weekly comparison. Every Friday, the agents compare this week with last week and add it to your Activity feed. A weekly summary email follows the same day.
- Everything is logged. The Agent work on Google Analytics list on the integration page records every time an agent read from this property.
Which AI agents use this connection
- Analyst & Reporter reads sessions, users, conversions, and engagement rate, and writes the report.
- SEO & Discovery reads which landing pages get visits from search.
- Performance Optimizer checks whether ad results match what happened on the site.
- App Growth uses the same property when GA4 already collects your app traffic.
None of them can edit tags, filters, or key events. Those stay in Google.
If something looks wrong
- The property list is empty. The Google user you signed in with cannot see a GA4 property. Disconnect, then sign in with the user you gave Viewer access.
- Choose an account. You signed in but have not picked a property yet. Open the page and choose one.
- Sign in again or Expired. Google ended the access grant. This happens after a password change, or when access is removed in Google. Click Connect Google again.
- Needs attention. AIM could not read the property. Open the Google Analytics page in AIM to see the reason.
- The numbers are all zero. The tag is probably not on the live site. Check the Realtime report (step 6 of the setup).
What stays in your control
Disconnecting in AIM stops the agents immediately and removes AIM's access grant. Nothing in Google Analytics is changed or deleted. To revoke access on Google's side too, remove AIM under Third-party apps & services in your Google Account.
For ads, connect Google Ads separately. Analytics tells the agents what happened on your site. Ads is where they prepare campaigns.
Still need help setting this up?
If Realtime stays empty, or the property never appears after you sign in, contact the AIM team. Say you are connecting Google Analytics, and include the Measurement ID if you have it. We will help you finish the setup.
