App growth beyond CPI: a retention-first playbook

Cheap installs that churn in a week are not growth. How to point your campaigns — and your agents — at users who actually stay.

By The AIM team at Hekmalabs

Cost per install is the easiest number in app marketing to optimize, and one of the easiest to be misled by. A campaign can halve its CPI by finding people who install out of curiosity and never open the app again.

Real app growth is retained, active users. That changes what you measure, what you optimize for, and what you ask your agents to watch.

The problem with optimizing for installs

  • Installs are a proxy. They tell you an ad worked, not that the product did.
  • Cheap audiences churn fast. The lowest-cost installs often have the weakest day-7 retention.
  • Budget follows the metric. If CPI is the target, spend drifts toward the audiences that look best on the wrong number.

A retention-first measurement stack

Before you change a single campaign, make sure you can see what happens after the install:

  1. Define the activation event. The first action that signals real value — a completed profile, a first order, a first workout.
  2. Track in-app events. Send them back to the ad platforms so campaigns can optimize for them, not just for installs.
  3. Read cohorts, not totals. Compare day-1, day-7, and day-30 retention by campaign, channel, and creative.
  4. Name the real cost. Cost per retained user is the number that belongs in the report.

Point the optimization at users who stay

Once the events are flowing:

  • Shift budget toward cohorts that retain, even when their CPI is higher.
  • Test creative for expectation-setting. Ads that show the actual product attract users who are not surprised by it.
  • Split campaigns by intent. Search and high-intent placements often retain differently from broad social reach.
  • Re-read every cycle. Retention trails installs by days or weeks, so the loop needs to keep checking.

Where agents help

That last point is where an always-on loop earns its keep. In AIM, the App Growth agent tracks installs, in-app events, and retention cohorts, and hands its findings to the Performance Optimizer, which proposes budget and creative changes for the next cycle. The Analyst & Reporter keeps cost per retained user in the same report as everything else.

The takeaway

Stop celebrating cheap installs. Measure activation and retention, feed those events back to your campaigns, and let budget follow the users who stay.
